The search for the perfect metaphor
Today’s draft is inspired by an online retreat I (mostly) attended over New Year’s weekend.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published“Mind is the sky,” the teacher said,“Emotions are the weather. When you sit, you watch the weather pass.”He’s wrong, you know.Mind is the field, the grass, the soil under the field, andthe dark endless reach of the mycelium.Emotions are the six-year-olds on the field, bumbling through their first soccer game. They don’t know what their feet do or how their hands move.I could sit, watch the children pass, but like any parent of a human child, one (or two) of these are dear to me,so dear they are of my own fragile body.I watch them with a fierce protective tenderness. When they are bumped or tripped or slide on the muddy spaces,I run to them and tend thembefore they even know it hurts.
