Daredevil squirrel jumps out into the middle of the road

nearly runs headlong into the wheel of a car

while another sits upright on its haunches, and watches.

It is the season of squirrel chaos —

perhaps you think they are always chaos —

autumn brings out the murk from the depths of the wells

desperation, anxiety, darkness closing in on the days.

Slender, agile, freed of summer abundance,

they catch a current and ride across the trees

chattering to those below —

Observe the light folding away.
