Stress Test for the Awakened Heart

Nature's most poetic muscle

The human heart is a pretty amazing piece of science and engineering, and also the repository of some of the most enduring imagery I have ever read. How is your heart this week?

This heart beats when it wants to and calms at its own pace.

The readouts show that everything is normal.

No sign of ischemia,

valves functioning

muscle healthy and of normal size.

This rogue rhythm,

skipping past the chart counts --

this must be corrected.

By any means necessary.

An indoor hand suggests pharmaceuticals,

while the outdoor heart calms with twilight,

awakens to the heavy mists,

skips a moment

with the morning murmuration

dances back into its see-saw rhythm

as the heat slides into another summer day.
