Sarah Laughed

Matriarch of the impossible

I’m not sure where this one is going — I just know I’ve gotten captivated by the biblical Sarah, and the image of her laughing as she hears that she will bear a child at the age of 90 (or so.)

Look upon this earth with clear eyes.

Make diamonds of the morning light,

make rubies of the sunset.

And when someone suggests the next impossible thing —

like a child after menopause

or tender care for every broken person on the street —

Giggle in the doorway like a schoolgirl,

or an old woman,

or the last child on the playground as the bell rings.
