Hiding of the Winter Light

I have a hard time with the winter dark. Recently, my beloved got me a Happy Light to help with winter blues. I’ve been using it for about a week, and the difference is palpable. For the first couple of days, I had moments of feeling bereft when the light automatically turned off — until I imagined that the light wasn’t turning off, but instead going to live behind my own eyes. And with that thought, I wrote today’s draft.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when publishedAt a certain hour of day all the lights go outwinter presses hard into the graying skyso easy to feel it has pulled everything from inside your bodyrefilled it with ink, smoke, fog, and darkness. My love, you are a holder of the lightit travels to you, finding rest and home and safety. Know this -- when the lights go out, they have not gone --only shiftedfrom in front of to behind your eyes.Oh, my beloved, how they shine.

(I first learned about the Happy Light from my friend Brianne, who writes a lovely newsletter called Odyssey of the Body. If you have a body, and are interested in supporting the journey of your body through this life, I urge you to check it out.)

This past Saturday, I led my official “graduation” DANCEMandala session. Among other lovely things people said afterwards, one of the participants called me a “kind and lovely witch.” I believe that is my favorite compliment of all time.

Starting in December, I will be offering twice monthly DANCEMandala movement meditation sessions for all paid subscribers. These sessions will be offered virtually, via Zoom. I have found movement to be one of the primary ways I can reconnect to my writing self when it seems lost (like today.)

Paid subscriptions start at $5/month. Your support makes it possible to keep writing and exploring the creative process together.
