Daytime Rabbit
an animal and its instincts
Dear Ones, there are so. many. rabbits. running around. Baby rabbits under our porch. Half-grown rabbits crouched near the thick ground cover. Adult rabbits on the edges of lawns, and yes, used-to-be rabbits near the coyote haunts. Today’s draft was inspired by one of those rabbits.
A dark-eyed rabbit in the center of the lawn —
still, and never still,
fur twitching at the vibrations of my footsteps,
body of pure awareness.
Just a block before,
I stepped — gently — over a rain-soaked clump of fur
left in the grass by nightime coyotes,
evidence of young ones moving just too slowly.
I stand still before this living rabbit, breathe out my intention —
You are safe —
The rabbit, wise with instinct,
bolts into the thick undergrowth.
