Blue Suitcase

Traveling with the past

Today’s draft is inspired by an upcoming trip, and the delightful and pristine turquoise suitcase that I am currently packing.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when publishedThis is what I picture:You at Dillard's, short silent steps and a gleam in your eye, standing in front of the luggage display. Practical colors, hard-shelled bags, nothing quite right. On the back wall you see it --Two bags in turquoise, standing together.A short one and a tall one, like you standing next to your son.The color delights your eleven-year-old soul, the gleam in your eye moves over your face and you shine."Ooh," you say, "I like that one." At home you stand the empty cases in your room, sit in your chair and look at them, lean forward and stroke them with the back of your hand, dreaming of adventure. I open them now, packing for Thailand. The color delights my eleven-year-old soul.A gleam moves over my face, I shine. I close the zippers, wheel them to the airport gatewhere I stroke them with the back of my hand, ready for adventure.
