Aphasia
When the words won't come
One of the things that is happening in my menopause transition is some difficulty finding words. There are pauses and long silences where I used to be able to move through language with ease. I am still learning to appreciate the in-between spaces.
We sat looking at one another,
eye-to-eye over the computer screen,
suspended in the moment as I reached out for the word
and the word slipped just beyond me.
“No,” I said, “menopause won’t give me the word.”
We smiled together in our separate spaces.
Women slipping just beyond
able to speak the language of silence.
